Every university implements rules and policies to regulate the actions of students. They create codes and directives to make students conform to the standards of the school. Student codes serve as disciplinary and security measures to maintain orderliness within the campus and preserve the welfare of students. When a student violates a code regulation, he or she is sanctioned based on the student code.
Academic control does not exist only in class and within campus premises. It reaches as far as the various student housing units located off campus. In the United States, schools coordinate with the landlords of student housing apartments to ensure the safety and security of their students. These efforts ensure that university students display proper decorum even in off-campus housing facilities. University authorities and landlords are also able to prevent possible mishaps caused by the negligence of students.
In Utah, for instance, universities such as Brigham Young University (BYU) oblige owners and landlords of off-campus housing units to implement policies and regulations similar with provisions in the code enforced on the campus. What are these rules and provisions? Here are some student housing conditions set by most universities in the state.
Student apartments such as those included in
BYUI off campus housing must implement visiting hours for their tenants. Guests are allowed to enter the housing’s premises only from 9:00 am to midnight, and this may extend until 1:30 am on Fridays. Landlords, with due notice to students, may implement shorter visiting hours. Most housing sites recognize this rule, especially for apartments that house single students.
A student housing facility, such as a
BYUI housing unit, must have separate living spaces for male and female students. Likewise, visitors and guests of the opposite sex are not allowed to use bathrooms in exclusive lodging spaces, unless for emergency and civility cases. Aside from their own rooms, students are permitted to enter only the common living room and kitchen of the housing facility.
Moreover, students are not allowed to bring, serve, and consume alcoholic beverages and harmful drugs in student housing units such as
BYUI off campus housing facilities. Students are prohibited from possessing pornographic and obscene materials and are forbidden from engaging in gambling activities. Proper decorum must be displayed in both in-campus and off-campus housing facilities.
