It is without much doubt that a majority of students who are going to choose college after high school will also plan to spend their years living in a dormitory or in an apartment. Your way of living is about to change because it is very much different than it was when you were living at home. Dependent on the cost and how much space is available for you, there is a possibility of either having a roommate or a private room.

If you get the luck of the draw of having a private room, then you don’t have to worry of getting used to a dorm mate. But there are some concerns that you need to take care of, such as security. One, because you have to get used to being far away from your parents and your home, and Two, because you are the one who will place your own safety in your own hands.

Dorms are relatively safe for students but it won’t hurt if you will need a little more security for yourself. You can ask for security chains even door alarms that will alert anyone should there be any forced intrusion into your room.

Having a roommate doesn’t hurt either since you’d be more secure in terms of safety. When you live in dorms provided by the byu student housing commission you will have to get used to be with hundreds of other students especially during recess.

You won’t have that same opulence of handling and preparing your own meal. Some byui approved housing dormitories allow if not provides a microwave for your room. If your family or anyone you know will send you a home cooked meal then by all means you’re set.

Choosing to live in byu student housing dorms means you also have to get used with sharing bathroom with the other students. Don’t worry about showering since that is the only thing you won’t be sharing. Also, don’t forget that when you live in dorms you will have to follow some general house rules. If there is something you don’t like about it, treat it as some sort of precaution for you. You’d rather choose to be in a safe position in this regard.
